Helping a Parent or Loved One

Buying an Adjustable Bed or Recliner Chair for a Parent

Many people start researching adjustable beds and rise and recline chairs on behalf of a mum, dad or other loved one. Your support can be really valuable — as long as the decision stays theirs. Here's how to help well.

Starting the conversation

Choose a relaxed moment, not a rushed one. Rather than announcing that they “need” something, ask open questions: how are they finding their current chair or bed? Is there anything they'd like to be more comfortable?

Listen more than you talk. They may already have thought about it — or have reasons for hesitating that you hadn't considered.

Understanding what they actually want

It's easy to focus on what you think would help. The most useful thing you can do is find out what matters to them — whether that's reading in bed, getting comfortable in the evenings or simply having a chair they love the look of.

Involving them in the decision

This is their home and their comfort. Share information, help them compare, and be there to talk it through — but let them lead. People are far more likely to enjoy a product they chose themselves.

Comfort preferences

Everyone is different. Some like a firm seat, some soft. Some like to sit upright, others to recline. Encourage your parent to think about how they like to sit and rest — our bed and chair buying guides can help with the details.

Space in the home

A practical way to help is to measure the room together and note doorways, stairs and plug sockets. It saves time later and helps everyone picture how the product will fit.

Controls and ease of use

The handset should feel easy to your parent, not just to you. Encourage them to try the controls themselves and say honestly if anything feels awkward.

Being there for the demonstration

Family members are welcome to attend a DHS home demonstration. Being there means you can ask questions, help remember details and talk things over afterwards — while your parent tries the products for themselves.

If you can't be there in person, ask your parent what they thought and what questions came up.

Comparing options

It's sensible to compare. Look at how well each product fits, how easy it is to use, how it suits the room, and who delivers and installs it. The cheapest or most feature-packed option isn't always the best fit.

Avoiding pressure

A good company will give your parent time and space to decide. At DHS, demonstrations are free, with no obligation and no pressure. If they want to think it over or talk to you first, that's absolutely fine.

Installation

Ask who will deliver and set up the product, and whether they'll show your parent how to use it. DHS delivers and installs with our own team and shows how everything works before leaving.

Questions to ask together

  • What would make day-to-day life more comfortable for you?
  • Would a bed, a chair, or both make the most difference?
  • How do you like to sit, rest and sleep?
  • Are the controls easy for you to use?
  • Will it fit well in the room?
  • Would you like someone with you at the demonstration?
